Lady Clam at UPA Sectionals

posted Sep 21, 2009 5:27 PM by Sally H

A roster of 18 Lady Clam players attended the UPA Club Sectionals in Burnlington, Washington on September 19th, 2009. After only three practices and with multiple new players the team's goal was to learn and improve on-the-fly against such world-class teams as Traffic and Riot.

Lady Clam played 4 teams: Apartment 11, Traffic, Riot and Seattle Underground (Riot's B-team) with one win (13-10) over Apartment 11 and losses to Traffic, Riot and Seattle Underground. It was a great learning experience with many players making significant improvements to their field position, skills, and ability to play against zone and man defence.

The team qualifed for UPA Club Regionals (Northwest) which takes place in Corvallis, Oregon on October 3rd & 4th, 2009.

SFU Lady Clam at PLU BBQ

posted Mar 23, 2009 2:59 PM by Sally H

SFU Lady Clam placed 4th at PLU BBQ over the March 21st-22nd weekend in Puyallup, Washington. It was a good first tournament of the season with some new members as well as veterans playing together and learning each other's strengths.

Both Saturday and Sunday mornings were marred by the lack of organization as the team showed up for games that had been postponed to the following time slot. The ladies cheered on the men's team and enjoyed a long warmup both days as a result.

Saturday games:
SFU vs. Toto = loss
SFU vs. OSU = win
SFU vs. PLU = loss

Sunday games:
SFU vs. ? = win
SFU vs. PLU = loss
SFU vs UW = loss

Stanford Invite - Ripon, California, March 7-8, 2009

The quick recap of the Stanford tournament, as written by Gary Richardson (head coach):

We played 3 games on Saturday and 4 games on Sunday. We had 14 people at the start of the tournament. I  was the only one who didn't play the whole weekend due to my knee injury. There were no bracket games -- there were 6 pool games and then a single placement game.

On Saturday, we beat Stanford-B, lost to San Deigo and beat UCSB-B. On Sunday we beat UC-Merced, Cal-B and then lost to Louise and Clark. Our pool play record was 4-2 (probably the best that SFU has ever done at a tournament). We came in second in our pool and earned the privilege to play a tier 1 team for our placement game. Our last game of the day was a loss to Colorado Mamabird.

I'm not sure what place we came in for the tournament -- it's not up at http://www.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=127&id=5756. Based on the pools, we beat our seed.

Aside from our record, the team was merciless. In our wins, no team scored more than 5 points. That's not to say they were blowouts -- the team put the foot to the puppy in the second half of these games. They didn't give the opposition a chance to claw back. In fact, in the 4 wins, teams scored fewer points in the second half than the first. That allowed us to finish our games early and rest up for the next challenge.

Our loss to Louis and Clark was a solid game. I think the final score was 13-9. The team dug hard and came up with big D's, but couldn't convert enough of them to win.

Anyway, ask some of the players about it -- there were so many huge plays all weekend long.

Men's Team
We've had our first scrimmage of the year against UBC on Sat Feb. 07, 2009.
There was no official score keeping and therefore the precise number of points scored by each team is unknown.
However, it was clear by the end that SFU Ultimate came out victorious. Good job guys!
